House Republicans attack Alan Cohn and Eric Lynn over student loans

The primary season is not over, and national Republicans are already studying the personal finances of Democratic congressional candidates.

National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) lambasted Eric Lynnthe Democratic candidate for Florida’s 13th congressional district, and Alain Cohna Democrat from Florida’s 15th congressional district, for taking out large student loans.

House Republicans point to reports President that of Joe Biden the administration plans to continue forgiving up to $10,000 in student loans for borrowers.

Cohn has between $15,000 and $50,000 in student loans, according to his candidate financial disclosure. Lynn has between $10,000 and $15,000 in debt.

“Does Alan Cohn agree with this irresponsible plan?” reads an email from the NRC spokesperson Camille Gallo.

She also pointed to a Momentive poll, conducted for CNBCwhich shows that 59% of Americans fear that canceling student debt will lead to higher inflation.

“But Eric Lynn doesn’t care,” Gallo wrote in an email about Lynn, noting that the plan would personally benefit Lynn by eliminating all or most of her personal debt.

Lynn, for his part, said he would support a loan forgiveness effort but with some restrictions.

“Eric Lynn supports the cancellation of up to $10,000 in student loans for borrowers earning less than $100,000, which would help working families struggling to cope with rising costs of living due to Republican tax breaks for the ultra-rich at the expense of everyday Americans,” read a statement from his campaign.

“Lynn is the only FL-13 candidate who will always stand up for working families, veterans and seniors.”

The attacks were notable not only for the substantive issue of student loans, but also for what the NRCC has fixed.

Lynn is seeking to succeed the Democratic US Representative. charlie christ in CD 13, a tough climb after Florida’s redistricting process quirky the Pinellas County seat from a Biden won in the 2020 election to one where the Republican donald trump led by 7 percentage points.

After it became clear that the map would hold this election cycle, all Democrats except Lynn dropped out. The barack obama member of the administration will face the Republican who emerges from a Primary GOP held today.

Cohn, meanwhile, is still in contention in a five-candidate primary in CD 15, where his main challenger is the former MoveOn videographer. Eddie Geller. A Democratic primary Tuesday will determine which candidate runs in the district, with five Republicans separately battling for the GOP nod. The district has no incumbent. Trump won CD 15 under the new lines, but just barely, with 50.86% of the vote to Biden’s 47.74%.
